When I was writing this piece, I was tired and emotional—in a good way. Most of my composition sessions were fragmented into short piano improvisations, away from the wearying computer screen. I was trying to translate musically a few thoughts and reflections that had been occupying my mind at the time. I had been reading voraciously, and a phrase from Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden Life of Trees stayed with me, which inspired the title of this song. Even as someone who enjoys solitude, I’ve learned over the years that life is a complex, interdependent system, and the belief that we can do it all on our own is an illusion. We are strengthened by nurturing the healthy relationships in our lives, and those relationships carry us forward in countless ways. Furthermore, we sometimes have to let go, give up control, and allow certain aspects of our lives to take care of themselves—they will bloom on their own.
